Mobile media, mobility and location in relation to communication and identity.
Possible themes to explore:
Mobile media's implications on the reconfiguration of time and space (theoretically based in Carey)
How being able to communication instantaneously has impacted communication
frequency
formality
mindful communication (etc.)
How being able to communicate from virtually anywhere has impacted communication
frequency
formality
mindful communication (etc).
[Both of the above would be interesting, of course. I've wondered what Carey would make of mobile media, and particularly smartphones. My guess is that he would be particularly interested in the ways in which they've inserted forms of communication into spaces in which they hadn't taken place before.]
How mobile media influences identity
mobile media advertising campaigns
mobile devices and fashion
mobile media addiction (and other psychological issues)
The impact of mobile media on physical travel
Ways in which mobile media has improved physical travel
Traffic/Public Transport Apps
GPS devices
Google Maps
Foursquare
Ways in which mobile media has now made physical travel sometimes unnecessary
Skype
???
[The first two items (the material vis a vis Carey) seem nicely connected. The other two topics are interesting, but overall you have more or less three topics here, and really should concentrate on just one, at least for purposes of this seminar (though if someone else were to pitch in...?)]
